t arrival beckons us to reconnect with the outdoors. But after a long winter, our lawns and gardens might be feeling a bit neglected. Fear not! This season is the perfect time to awaken your outdoor space and prepare it for the joys of summer.

Spring Cleaning for a Healthy Foundation

The winter months leave their mark. Leaves, branches, and debris can smother your lawn and garden, hindering new growth. A thorough spring cleaning service can make all the difference:

           Clear away winter debris:

Removing fallen leaves, twigs, and branches allows sunlight and air to reach the soil, promoting healthy growth.

           Revitalize your lawn:

Aeration pokes holes in compacted soil, allowing air, water, and nutrients to penetrate deeper, strengthening your grass. Dethatching removes the layer of dead grass and debris that can prevent these elements from reaching the roots.

           Sharpen those edges:

Crisp, defined edges between your lawn and garden beds not only enhance the overall look but also discourage weeds from encroaching.

           Prep your garden beds:

Removing spent annuals, clearing weeds, and prepping the soil sets the stage for a flourishing season of flowers, vegetables, or whatever your green thumb desires.

December 21,2023 is officially the first day of winter. Are your trees prepared?

December 21,2023 is officially the first

           day of winter. Are your

          trees prepared?

Go through the below checklist to ensure that your trees are prepared for whatever type of winter Mother Nature throws at us!

          Cleanup

Before you can start to strengthen your trees you have to clean up the dead ones first. Remove dead or fallen trees or branches from your property, or if they’re too large, hire a tree removal company to do the job for you. Another way to cleanup your yard is to remove or replant wayward seedlings that have popped up a little too close to your home or other plants.

          Prune

One of the last parts of the cleanup process is pruning. Pruning a tree consists of removing dead or dying branches, which fortifies the overall strength of a tree. This process is vital to sustaining the life of your trees throughout the winter, not to mention it protects your property. When heavy snow falls and sits on dying branches it can cause them to fall, in turn possibly damaging your property or your family. Get pruning before it snows!

          Wrap Trees

Leaves provide an extra layer of protection for trees so when they die it’s important to keep protecting your trees in an alternative way. Wrapping your trees provides a layer of protection that helps them fight off winter sunscald and other bark-damaging conditions. You can wrap your trees Pro-tip: Wrap your trees top to bottom, that way moisture won’t collect in the folds!

          Water

We’re all accustomed to draughts in the summer but what about winter draughts? Although we picture snow and ice, winters can be just as dry as summers so it’s important to give your trees a drink. Give your trees a little extra water during the fall months and mulch to retain moisture.

          Mulch

Placing mulch around your trees helps them retain moisture and reduce temperature extremes in the soil during the dryer, colder winter months. An important thought to keep in mind when mulching is to remember to leave a 6-nch space between your tree and the mulch to discourage fungus growth on the actual trunk itself.

          Fertilize

Between the hot summer and the cold winter, the soil around your trees is guaranteed to lose some of its nutrients. Give your trees a treat by treating their soil with fertilizer. A slow-release fertilizer should help sustain your trees throughout the winter as well as ward off damage, disease, and insects.

          Plant

Who knew that when everything is dying it’s actually a perfect time to plant new life? Cooler late fall and winter temperatures are perfect for stimulating root growth in new trees. On the surface it might look like your tree is dying but below the ground its roots become strong and prepared for a quick spring growth spurt.

veral signs that you may need to have a tree removed from your property.

Here are some of the most common signs:

          Dead or dying tree:

A tree that is dead or dying is a safety hazard and should be removed as soon as possible. Look for signs such as brittle or falling branches, lack of leaves or greenery, and a trunk that is hollow or decaying.

          Leaning tree:

If a tree is leaning more than 15 degrees, it may be unstable and at risk of falling. This is especially concerning if the tree is near a structure or pedestrian area.

Cracks in the trunk or major limbs:

Large, deep, or widening cracks in the trunk or major limbs can indicate structural weakness and may mean the tree is at risk of falling.

          Root damage:

If the roots of a tree have been damaged, the tree may become unstable and may need to be removed. Signs of root damage can include soil erosion, root rot, or damage from construction equipment.

          Insect infestation or disease:

An insect infestation or disease can weaken a tree and make it more susceptible to damage or falling. Look for signs such as holes in the bark, sawdust around the base of the tree, or discolored or wilted leaves.

Feed Your Lawn: Fall fertilizing helps lawns establish vigorous roots, increase energy reserves and survive winter.

Overseed Thin Lawns: Fall conditions are ideal for germinating cool-season grass seed. Overseeding thin lawns pays off with thick, strong, spring grass.

Repair Bare Spots: Fall temperatures and precipitation support quick establishment.

Remove Excess Thatch: That layer of organic matter that forms between soil and grass blades can benefit lawns when it's thin. But when that layer, known as thatch, builds up to more than 1/2 inch thick, it can limit the movement of water and nutrients and encourage disease. Dethatching can restore a healthy interface between grass and soil.

Aerate compacted Soil: Compacted soil restricts root development and limits soil oxygen. Aerators correct compaction by creating openings in the soil.

Apply top dressing: Topdressing means applying a thin layer of soil or compost to your existing turf. The process improves growing conditions by reducing thatch, increasing the amount of organic matter in the soil, smoothing bumps in the lawn, and lessening the need for fertilizer. Spread a ¼- to ½-inch layer of high-quality soil over the entire lawn, especially in problem areas where grass is thinning. Be sure to dethatch or aerate before you apply a topdressing during fall lawn care. Then work the topdressing into the soil by raking it in.

Keep Mowing: Continue with good mowing practices for your grass type, timed to grass growth instead of calendar days. Mowing grass slightly shorter than normal can be helpful where winter fungal diseases are problems, but don't save it for the end; gradually decrease the height instead.

Clean up Leaves: Leaves left unattended can suffocate lawn grasses and invite disease.
